Basins: The Soul of the Bathroom (Part 1)

Choosing the perfect basin is one of the most exciting of designing your bathroom. You can think of the basin that essential piece of bathroom soul as it provides a foundation for the design and feel of your space. Remember,  the basin isn’t just a functional bit of bathroomware; it’s  one of the main focal points of the room and contributes to the overall character and style.

Since there’s so much to cover when it comes to choosing a basin, we’ve decided to split this blog into two parts. In Part 1, we’ll explore the different types of basins and the materials available, helping you understand how these elements shape both the aesthetics and functionality of your space. Part 2,  coming next month, will focus on how to choose the best basin for your specific room, whether it's a family bathroom, guest bathroom, or powder room.

Types of Basins

There are several basin styles to choose from, each with its own unique look and purpose. Here's an overview of some of the most popular types:

  • Vessel Basin:  Vessel basins proudly assert themselves atop the vanity and can make a bold design statement. They are perfect for bathrooms where aesthetics are the priority. They're best suited for guest bathrooms or ensuites where style can shine without heavy daily use.

  • Semi-Recessed Basin: Semi-recessed basins partially sit within the vanity top, offering ample surface space without taking up too much room. This option is great for family bathrooms where functionality and design are essential.

  • Under-Counter Basin: If you love minimalist and modern bathrooms, under-counter basins are perfect. They sit under the counter for a streamlined, clutter-free look. They are highly functional and easy to clean, making them a popular choice for high-traffic family bathrooms.

  • Wall-Hung Basin: Wall-hung basins are mounted directly to the wall, sometimes perched above a vanity, freeing up floor space. They are an excellent option for bathrooms or powder rooms where one wants to create an open, airy feel without compromising functionality.

  • Drop-In Basin: A drop-in basin sits inside a cut-out in the countertop, with the rim visible on the surface. This is a traditional style, yet it can look sleekly modern and elegant with a flush finish to the countertop.

  • Hand Wash Basin:  This basin is explicitly designed for compact spaces. It is small but functional and ideal for powder rooms or water closets where space is at a premium.

  • Integrated Vanity Basin: Integrated with a vanity unit, these basins offer ample storage and surface space. They're perfect for busy family bathrooms where both form and function are essential.

Does Material Matter?

Absolutely. The material of your basin plays a major role in both its appearance and durability. Here are some of the most popular options:
