5 clever ways to maximise storage in your bathroom

A beautifully designed bathroom can be a sight to behold. But while a bathroom may look great at first glance, it still needs to ultimately function as a bathroom. Therefore, it needs plenty of storage space.

Even if you have a passion for the current decluttering trend, the truth is you still need to store all the essentials. And there are just so many things that you need to pack into your bathroom when you think about it - towels, toilet paper, toothbrushes, soaps, medicine, cleaning supplies, shampoo bottles, grooming items. The list goes on and on.

Most of these items need to be used on a day-to-day basis, such as your toothbrush, so it makes sense to have these items kept somewhere where they are easy to grab when needed and placed back in the same spot. Whilst other items like cleaning supplies can afford to be kept more out of the way, you still want to be able to quickly find them when you need them.

This is why having plenty of storage options in your bathroom is so important. Otherwise, things can quickly become a cluttered mess. Not only that, but your storage should be practical and clever, allowing you to easily find, reach and replace items once used.

In this blog post, we take a quick look at 5 ways you can maximise storage in your bathroom so that it not only looks great but is functional too.

1. Install a wall mounted shaving cabinet

This is probably one of the easiest ways to add extra storage to your bathroom. Shaving cabinets fell out of style a bit, most likely due to their bulky appearance when bathroom design trends began leaning towards streamlining everything. However, these days shaving cabinets are much more minimalistic.

A modern shaving cabinet consists of a vanity mirror with sliding or hinged doors which hide a deep recessed cabinet. This keeps everything looking sleek whilst providing excellent storage. Plus, many of these cabinets come with nifty features such as inbuilt lighting in the mirror. There’s also a range of shapes available now too, rather than just your standard old rectangle. You can get round and oval shaped mirrors to complement the type of style you are after.

2. Choose a vanity with drawers

Most vanities available on the market consist of either shelves or a combination of drawers and shelves. But the absolute best option storage-wise is a vanity with drawers only.

Drawers make it so much easier to keep your bathroom vanity organised. You can see everything in the drawer at a glance, allowing you to best maximise how everything is arranged. In comparison, vanities with shelves are a pain to keep organised. Bottles, grooming items and cleaning supplies are guaranteed to get lost in that mysterious dark space at the back of the cabinet where you can’t see things properly, leading to a disorganised mess. And when your vanity is disorganised, you’re not getting the most out of your storage options.

Here's a tip to keep in mind when shopping for a vanity with drawers - make sure you check the depth of the drawers. Having drawers is great, but they need to be deep enough to fit common bathroom items in. If you’ve got a vanity in mind that you’d like to purchase, first consider the height of the biggest bottle of shampoo/cleaning product in your current bathroom and determine whether you’ll be able to fit it in those drawers.

3. Add a tall boy

Tall boys are not commonly seen in bathrooms, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t at least consider one, especially if you really need that extra storage space!

There’s a wide range of tall boys available on the market today which are designed for bathrooms. They come in all different colours, finishes and sizes, so you can easily match a tall boy with your existing bathroom design. Most have adjustable shelves, giving you flexibility in what you can keep in there. Some will also come with a drawer at the bottom, which is super handy for easily grabbing those essential everyday items.

4. Opt for wall mounted accessories

The countertop of our bathroom vanities is quite often used as a bit of a “dumping ground” for everyday items - such as hand soap and toothbrushes. While this isn’t really a problem, it does limit the amount of countertop space you could use for other items.

To free up a bit more of your countertop space, consider installing some wall mounted accessories to hold your everyday items, such as a wall mounted liquid soap dispenser, soap dish and toothbrush holder. There are also some really great and stylish wall mounted baskets available for storing anything from hairdryers to lotions to extra towels.

5. Don’t forget about the space above the toilet

The wall space directly above the toilet is often not utilised for anything. But if you really need to maximise your storage options, every inch of space counts! Try adding a floating shelf on the wall to keep essentials on, such as toilet paper and air freshener.
